Top 12 Tips for Maintaining Your Cotton Sarees and Clothing

This blog provides an overview of the top 12 tips and suggestions for maintaining your cotton wear, such as sarees, dresses, shirts and other cotton clothing.

People prefer cotton for clothing because it is the most breathable fabric. The absorbent cotton fabric absorbs and evaporates sweat, leaving you dry, cool, and odor-free.

We frequently lament the decline in cotton clothing quality nowadays. Our old clothes performed far better than our new ones. The fabric colours of the new ones fade quickly and become far too worn out.

The truth is that our grandmothers used to take good care of them. They used gentle methods and took special care to keep them crisp and clean.

I’ve compiled a few tips for maintaining cotton clothing below. Let’s get started with the top 12 tips and suggestions:

  1. Before washing the new cotton clothing (saree/ dress/other) for the first time, soak it for 10-15 minutes in a bucket of warm water mixed with 2-3 spoons of rock salt. This will help lock the color and avoid fading away in future washes.
  2. Use only a mild detergent to wash.
  3. Do not wring it vigorously; instead, hang it over a water-tap and allow the excess water to drain off.
  4. Remember to wash them separately as they are bound to leave color for the first few washes
  5. Try to wash cotton less frequently—to maintain its color and quality.
  6. To prevent clothes from fading, wash garments inside out, and try to use cold water only.
  7. Never rub a hard brush on your cotton clothes to remove a stain as it will tear down the quality of the fabric
  8. High temperatures and hot water may cause cotton fibers to shrink. The amount of shrinkage depends on how the fabric was woven at the textile plant, as well as how it was finished and sized.
  9. Cotton fabrics are less susceptible to static cling than synthetic fabrics. Fabric softeners soften cotton fibres and may reduce some wrinkling. However, it is not required for cotton clothing care, and the use of fabric softener is optional.
  10. As a thumb rule, always starch cotton sarees (after wash) to ensure that they retain their crispness and stay stain-free
  11. Storing: Always hang sarees/ dresses in your wardrobe with the help of a hanger or else store them neatly in pouches which are easily available in the market or you order a few online.
  12. Removing stains: Dry cleaning, petrol wash or rubbing a baking powder + vinegar paste should be the ideal way of handling any kind of stains.
